Germany has introduced the Digital Master Assessment Test, or dMAT, for selected Indian students planning to pursue a master’s degree at a German university. This complete guide explains who needs it, how it works and how to prepare.
The test is being added to the APS documentation and verification process for applicants from specified academic backgrounds. It does not replace the APS certificate, university grades, language tests or the individual admission process followed by German universities.
For affected students, the dMAT certificate will become an important part of the German master’s application journey from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards. APS India: dMAT notice
This guide covers who must take the test, exemptions, structure, question types, fees, dates, scoring, original sample questions and practical preparation.
dMAT at a Glance
What Is the dMAT?
The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test for master’s applicants. It assesses reasoning, analytical and academic application skills relevant to graduate study in Germany.
It was developed by German universities with the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.). The format was developed with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel; subject modules are developed with German universities, with original support from DAAD. Official dMAT overview
Why has Germany introduced it?
Applicants come from systems with different grading standards, course structures and assessment methods. A standardised result helps compare academic aptitude across backgrounds. It tests whether students can identify patterns, solve unfamiliar problems, interpret texts, formulas and tables, transfer information and evaluate academic arguments—not merely recall facts.
Who Must Take the dMAT in India?
During the introductory phase, the requirement applies to master’s applicants whose previous degree belongs to Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics; or Business and Management.
All four conditions must apply: the previous degree is in an affected field; the applicant seeks a master’s in Germany; the intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later; and no transitional exemption applies. Classification follows the official APS affected-fields list (PDF), not an informal degree label.
Computer Science, Data Science and interdisciplinary degrees
Data Science, Business Analytics, Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering, FinTech, Management Information Systems, Business Computing, AI and Computational Engineering can be hard to classify by name. Check the exact programme against the APS list; do not assume exemption merely because “Engineering” or “Management” is absent.
Who does not currently need it?
Bachelor’s applicants
PhD applicants
Applicants outside the selected fields
Applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or recognised partnership programmes
Bachelor’s students who have not completed five semesters of a three-year programme or seven semesters of a four-year programme
Applicants covered by the transitional exemption
Transitional exemption
A student is exempt for the relevant APS procedure if APS online registration was completed before 29 June 2026, or the complete APS documents were shipped before that date. Students who already received an APS certificate do not need dMAT for that completed application. New applications may be governed by later rules.
Winter Semester 2026/27
The first Indian results are due on 12 October 2026, so the introduction is intended for Summer Semester 2027 and later, not Winter Semester 2026/27.
How dMAT Fits into APS
dMAT does not replace APS. APS still verifies degrees, transcripts, academic records, institutional recognition, formal plausibility and authenticity. The dMAT result is reflected on the APS certificate.
Can you apply for APS before the result?
Yes. APS may begin checking other documents, but cannot issue the final certificate until the dMAT certificate has been submitted and verified against g.a.s.t. information. Only the dMAT certificate may follow later; other academic documents cannot be added or replaced through this arrangement. Read the full APS procedure and FAQ.
dMAT Test Pattern and Structure
For the Indian APS procedure, dMAT contains a Core Module and a General Academic Module. The first measures general cognitive and analytical ability; the second applies those abilities to academic material and unfamiliar problems.
The Core has 60 tasks in 75 minutes. General Academic lasts 90 minutes, giving 165 minutes (2 hours 45 minutes) of working time, rounded in official material to approximately three hours. Official preparation page
Core Module Question Types
1. Figure Sequences
These measure visual and abstract reasoning. Symbols in grids can change position, direction, rotation, colour or movement interval. Movement can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal; boundary behaviour can include bouncing or continuing along an edge. Symbols do not disappear, overlap or leave the matrix. Candidates solve 20 series in 25 minutes without notes.
2. Mathematical Equations
Letters represent integers from 1 to 20, with one value per letter inside each system. Candidates combine equations and substitute efficiently: 20 systems in 25 minutes, without notes.
3. Latin Squares
Each permitted letter must occur once in each row and column. Official dMAT tasks use a 5×5 grid; candidates solve 20 tasks in 25 minutes without notes.
General Academic Module
Candidates receive academic texts or problems followed by single-choice questions. Material may include explanations, formulas, graphs, tables, diagrams, research descriptions, scientific data, models or technical processes. The module lasts 90 minutes and notes are not allowed.
Contexts may come from mathematics, computational and natural sciences, engineering, business, economics, social sciences and humanities. The task is to understand supplied information, transfer rules, interpret data, evaluate research design, detect contradictions and calculate from given material—not to memorise every undergraduate syllabus.
Is it a subject-knowledge test?
It is partly knowledge-related but not purely factual. It combines academic comprehension, quantitative reasoning, methodological awareness, transfer and problem solving. Prepare both rapid reading of unfamiliar material and broad quantitative foundations.
General Academic Sample Questions
Language, Notes and Calculators
Official rules prohibit note-taking; the terms also prohibit calculators and other electronic devices. Practise mental arithmetic, visual tracking, elimination and short equation solving. Current modules are in English. dMAT is not an English test like IELTS, TOEFL or TestDaF, but academic reading skill matters. Official terms and test-day rules
Registration, Dates, Fees and Centres
The fee is €150. g.a.s.t. handles registration, payment, centre selection, technical information and certificates. Seats are first-come, first-served.
Initial Indian locations: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. The final live list appears during registration; Hyderabad is not in the initial list. Official India details and registration
How Is dMAT Scored?
A low score does not automatically cause APS rejection
APS says dMAT is not a stand-alone pass/fail examination for the APS certificate. No universal public APS cut-off has been announced.
A high score does not guarantee admission
Universities decide independently and may also consider grades, prerequisites, credits, institution recognition, statements, work or research experience, language scores, GRE/GATE and programme-specific assessments. Beware of claims about one guaranteed “passing score.”
dMAT vs Other Tests
dMAT vs TestAS
dMAT vs GRE
GRE uses Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing; dMAT Core uses Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares, followed by academic problems. A programme may separately require GRE.
dMAT vs GMAT
GMAT serves graduate business admissions with its own quantitative, verbal and data formats. dMAT’s APS role does not replace GMAT where a school asks for it.
University entrance tests
Universities may still conduct aptitude tests, interviews, portfolios or exams. dMAT also has programme-specific modules used in contexts at RWTH Aachen and the University of Göttingen. Distinguish the General Academic Module for APS India from a university’s subject module.
Difficulty and Preparation
Difficulty comes from strict timing, unfamiliar formats, no notes, mental tracking, academic English, rapid switching and broad contexts. Core pacing averages 75 seconds per task.
Start with official material. Learn exact rules and examples first.
Practise without writing. Track position, rotation, colour and intervals mentally.
Build mental arithmetic. Fractions, percentages, ratios, linear equations, substitution and tables matter.
Read across disciplines. Use short texts from engineering, economics, business, data science, environmental science, psychology and research methods.
Practise evidence reasoning. Correlation/causation, sample/population, variables, necessary/sufficient conditions and percentage change.
Time full sections. Learn untimed, reduce to 30 minutes, then reach the official 25-minute limit.
Eight-week plan
Common mistakes
Memorising facts rather than practising application
Ignoring the no-notes rule
Spending too long on one Core item
Preparing only mathematics
