This is a question that appeared in an actual IELTS exam. This question and the remaining portions of the test were published in the Cambridge IELTS 18 book.
This is an interesting and a complex question. The responses to this question will greatly depend on one’s perspective and values. Since science is a multifaceted human activity, it has various aims and methods. It is challenging bordering on the impossible to rank these aims and methods in order of importance and figure out what is right or wrong.
One way is to distinguish between factual, technological, and normative aims of science, and argue that the most important aim is to improve people’s lives, because this is the ultimate goal of human existence and well-being. However, this argument might face some challenges, such as how to define and measure improvement, how to balance benefits and risks, and how to ensure ethical conduct of science.
Another way is to view science as a unified and coherent enterprise that aims to explain and understand the natural world and argue that the most important aim is not to improve people’s lives, but to satisfy our curiosity and expand our horizons. However, this argument might face some challenges, such as how to justify and evaluate scientific knowledge, how to relate and apply it to our lives, and how to communicate and share it with others.
There is no simple or definitive answer to this question, as different perspectives and arguments can have different strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, I think that the most important aim of science is to enrich our lives in various ways, whether it is by improving our living conditions, satisfying our curiosity, or expanding our horizons.
