Whether it is IELTS, PTE Core, or OET, these simple tips will help you boost your score without sweating it out too much!

Planning is important for success. So starting with general strategies, in this post, we will move on to section specific strategies that will help you improve your score across the board. Dive in!

General Strategies

Understand the Test Format and Requirements: Deeply familiarize yourself with the structure, question types, scoring criteria, and time limits. This knowledge will guide your preparation and reduce surprises on test day.

Take Practice Tests: Simulate the real test environment with timed, full-length practice tests. Analyze your results to identify strengths and weaknesses. This should be done ☑️ only once, and with care - before you start the preparation of your test. This will give you an idea of how hard, and how long to prepare.

Develop a Study Plan: Create a realistic study schedule dedicating focused time to each skill area (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Set short-term goals to stay motivated. These goals should be acheivable. ❌ Do not set lofty goals!

Work on Targeted Weaknesses:  Devote extra time to the sections or skills where you struggle the most. At the same time, do not despair if you do not show improvements immediately. Improvements in language are never linear. They happen in bursts.

Build Your Vocabulary: A strong vocabulary base benefits  all sections of the test. ❌ This does not mean memorising words! You must focus on being ☑️ able to use the words in your day to day life. Read articles, watch shows, to expand your knowledge of words. Look at our complete vocabulary tests here and here.

Reading-Specific Tips

Master Skimming and Scanning: Practice quickly locating ☑️ specific information in different text types (academic, news, etc.). Don't try to read every word in depth. And more importantly, ❌ do not look only for keywords!

Build Speed-Reading Skills: Develop techniques to increase your reading speed without compromising comprehension. One of the easiest ways of doing it is taking a short paragraph and timing yourself. Repeatedly doing this will start showing results in a short while. Practice 👌 reading aloud first, so that your 🗣️pronunciation will also improve.

Writing-Specific Tips

Strengthen Grammar and Sentence Structure:  Remember, this is not about ❌rules of grammar. It is about practicing writing error-free sentences of varying complexity. ☑️Start with simple sentences, and get them all correct. Then you can start varying complexity, by combining two or more simple sentences.

Organize Your Thoughts Effectively: Learn clear essay structures (introductions, body paragraphs, conclusions). While doing this, always remember that you must make it easy for the reader. Writing is all about 😁making the reader happy!

Read Sample Answers: Analyze high-scoring essays to learn effective language, tone, and presentation of ideas. ⚠️It is not about copying. It is about analysing what makes it a good essay. Focus on clarity, flow, and style rather than on words and sentences. ❌Do NOT focus on tiny details, get an overall picture first.

Listening-Specific Tips

Practice Active Listening:  Focus intently on audio recordings like lectures or conversations. Identify main points and supporting details. Once again, ❌ do not listen for words, listen for meaning. Focus on understanding meaning. The tests, whether it is IELTS, PTE Core, or OET focus on your ability to understand.

Get Accustomed to Various Accents: Practice with audio material  featuring different English accents (British, Australian, American, etc.).

Speaking-Specific Tips

Think out Loud in English: Force yourself to talk about everyday topics in English regularly to build fluency and confidence.

Practice With a Native Speaker or Experienced Tutor: Get valuable feedback on pronunciation, grammar, and clarity. 🟢 There are no tips - it is all about speaking clearly.

Record Yourself: Analyze your speech for  fluency, pacing, and flexibility. Your speech must sound natural. Compare the way you speak English with the way you speak your mother tongue. This will give you an understanding of where you are going worng.
