The definite article "the" is used to refer to a specific noun that has already been mentioned or is known to both the speaker and the listener. For example: "I saw the movie last night." Here, "the" is used because the movie being referred to has already been mentioned.
On the other hand, indefinite articles "a" and "an" are used to refer to a non-specific noun. "A" is used before nouns that begin with consonant sounds, and "an" is used before nouns that begin with vowel sounds. For example: "I saw a movie last night." Here, "a" is used because the movie being referred to is not specific.
