Idle wondering and information from around the world.

Coronavirus Vaccine - First Academy

The moment the world has been waiting for seems to be arriving, and soon. The vaccine for the dreaded CoViD-19 looks like it is on its merry way to us. Researchers from many countries are simulaneously working on finding a cure. Each is taking a different approach, and if reports are to be believed, several approaches seem to be yielding results.

The first one was the much publicised research which has reached the human trials stage at the University of Oxford. Now, it is the turn of Germany and Israel. Let us first look at news from Germany.

Germany

Researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany used the powerful MOGON II supercomputer which made more than 30 billion calculations to find that compounds from four hepatitis C drugs may be able to prevent the COVID-19 infection. The results are also supported by the fact that both Corona virus and the hepatitis C virus are of the same type.

--- That is only one small part, but a very positive one. Now, another news from Israel that will warm the cockles of many.

Israel

In the words of Defense Minister Naftali Bennet, the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) achieved a “significant breakthrough” in the search for an antidote to COVID-19. If rumours are to be believed, Israel is in the process of applying for a trademark.  The minister said that the institute had effectively isolated the antibody that attacks and neutralizes the COVID-19 virus in carriers' bodies.

Both these are significant breakthroughs that take us closer to a cure, and to getting back to our normal lives after several months of being under lockdown.  The lockdown has disrupted life across the world in a way that was hitherto believed to be unimaginable. Let us hope that, the world will be a better place, and that we all get to go where we want to.
