Halfway through the list of words that every English test taker needs to know, we look at a few commonly used words like Astride which while easy enough to understand can be confusing to use.

1. Astride

Sit or stand with one leg on each side

Sentence: She sat astride her new bike.

Sentence: He stood astride to block her way.

Sentence: My mom can’t sit astride the bike in a saree.

2. Clamor/Clamour

A loud complaint or demand from a crowd of people. The word can be used both as a noun and a verb.

Sentence: All the employees clamored in front of their office gate for a bonus.

Sentence: The students began to clamor for longer lunch breaks.

Sentence: The clamour to do something about climate change has been getting louder.

3. Converge

Meet at a common point; move towards each other or towards the same place.

Sentence: All of us decided to converge at the hotel before leaving.

Sentence: All the players were converging towards the goal post.

4. Delegate

To give a task or responsibility to another person. It could also mean a person who represents others.

Sentence: The teacher delegated assignments to the students soon after the class.

Sentence: Seniors can delegate their duties to juniors.

Sentence: Politicians are the delegates of common people.

5. Elated

Extremely happy and excited; in high spirits. A feeling of great joy or pride.

Sentence: She was elated when she was declared the winner.

Sentence: Indians felt elated when their team won the world cup.

Sentence: I dance when I feel elated.

6. Forsake

To give up, abandon or leave; especially at the time of need.

Sentence: He promised to be there for her but he forsook her.

Sentence: We should not forsake our principles for others.

7. Incorporate

To include or combine with something that is already existing.

Sentence: The student was asked to incorporate two more sentences into his speech.

Sentence: His salary incorporates house rent allowance.

8. Jostle

Means to push roughly against someone to make space or move past them.

Sentence: He jostled his way in the crowd to meet his favourite hero.

Sentence: Devotees jostle one another to get a glimpse of God.

Sentence: We were asked to not jostle each other.

9. Lapse

It means a break in continuity; an interval. Could also mean to come to an end gradually or temporarily.

Sentence: Short lapses are important while studying for a long time.

Sentence: The insurance policies usually lapse after a year.

10. Liable

Responsible for something or someone. Answerable for anything.

Sentence: He is liable to pay for the damage.

Sentence: Humans are liable for pollution.

Sentence: Zoos are liable to keep the animals safe.

11. Oblivious

Not conscious of something or someone; unaware.

Sentence: He was oblivious of the terms and conditions of the contract.

Sentence: She was oblivious of his bad intentions.

Sentence: People are oblivious of the tax policies in India.

12. Rural

Describes a place or lifestyle of countryside, farming; not of the town/city.

Sentence: Rural places have fertile lands for farming.

Sentence: Government should supply electricity to the rural areas.

Sentence: The rural side of the country is less polluted.

13. Taut

To pull very tight or stretch tightly. Could also mean emotionally or mentally strained.

Sentence: She is taut because of her financial crisis.

Sentence: The knot is taut to prevent the papers from falling.

Sentence: Her hair is taut into a ponytail.

14. Veer

To suddenly move in a different direction. Could also mean sudden change in opinion or behaviour.

Sentence: The guys veered their bike when they saw the cops on the road.

Sentence: Our opinion on women drivers can’t veer, it will take time.

15. Vulnerable

Capable of being physically or mentally hurt or damaged; weak.

Sentence: He is vulnerable to the virus as he is not vaccinated.

Sentence: Because she had 3 heart breaks, she is emotionally vulnerable.
