1. Askew

The word means turned or tilted to one side. Something that is crooked is askew.

Sentence: Even after spending 20 minutes trying to fix the photo frame, it still looks askew.

Sentence: All his plans went askew even after he was careful.

Sentence: His hair looked askew as if he had just woken up.

2. Contemporary

It means something happening or existing at the same time period or belongs of the present time. It could also mean a person living or existing at the same time as another.

Sentence: Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru were contemporaries.

Sentence: Most youngsters try to follow contemporary fashions.

3. Crude

Raw, and unfiltered. It could also mean blunt, impolite and rough.

Sentence: The dress was stitched by hand, so it looked slightly crude.

Sentence: He grew up alone in a jungle, his manners were crude.

4. Defiant

Someone who is bold, has a challenging attitude and refuses to obey authority.

Sentence: When the teacher asked him to get out of the class, he defiantly refused.

Sentence: Even after he was caught red-handed, he was defiant and said he was not wrong.

5. Fluctuate

Move irregularly. Can also mean being unstable.

Sentence: Petrol prices these days are fluctuating.

Sentence: My energy levels fluctuate dramatically depending on the weather.

6. Haphazard:

Without planning and order. Random, disorganized or dependent on chance.

Sentence: A teenager’s room is usually haphazard.

Sentence: The essay was written in a haphazard manner.

7. Inconceivable

Something that is hard to believe; unimaginable; almost impossible or unlikely to happen.

Sentence: In India it is inconceivable to think of policemen as honest.

Sentence: It seemed inconceivable that the bright student failed in the final exam.

8. Jeer

Make fun of something or someone in a rude, sarcastic manner.

Sentence: The spectators were jeering the player who was performing badly.

Sentence: We should not jeer at the bad luck of others.

9. Lenient

Not being harsh or strict. Relaxed, soft, understanding.

Sentence: The students were noisy in the class because they knew the teacher was lenient.

Sentence: The invigilators were lenient, so the students started cheating in the exam.

10. Obliterate

Destroy something completely.

Sentence: The murderers could not obliterate the evidence, so they got caught.

Sentence: In the match, the weak team was obliterated by the stronger one.

Sentence: All his property was obliterated in the fire.


11. Predicament

A situation that is difficult, confusing, and unpleasant.

Sentence: He was in a predicament. He fell in love with someone else a day before the wedding.

Sentence: The predicament for a lot of people is that you need money to make money.

12. Resilience

Ability to resist damage. Being tough. Recovering quickly from damage or bad situations.

Sentence: Agriculture in India is not resilient because it depends on rainfall.

Sentence: Trees are resilient, they live for years in harsh conditions.

13. Sprawl

spread out in a careless and untidy manner.

Sentence: He was so tired that he sprawled on the bed and fell asleep.

Sentence: All his clothes were lying in a sprawl on the floor.

Sentence: He sprawled all the sofa after everyone left. Till that time, he was sitting straight.

14. Tarnish

To reduce the quality of something; to put a black mark on.

Sentence: Leaving a cut apple in the open will tarnish it.

Sentence: His reputation was tarnished after he was caught taking a bribe.

15. Vigilant

Being careful, watchful and cautious

Sentence: Good students are always vigilant about their grades.

Sentence: The vigilant watchman spotted the thieves trying to enter the house.

Sentence: Mothers are vigilant about their children’s health.
